I know everyone is well into Lent by now, but every Lent the question comes up 'what am I going to give up for Lent'. I am a bit busy at work about now, but DH wrote a great article on this exact thing. It is very well written and it may just explain a bit about the how's and why's of what we do. Enjoy!
